- Mar 06, 2016 · One of the magazines did a test of several cast iron heads for under a grand. The Pro-max came out on top big time. The EQ and the Dart are replacement heads and are about equal to a stock Vortec on the flow bench. They do have stronger castings though. Vortec heads like to crack so keep that in mind. The pro-Max heads are really nice.

- The heads you have (double hump 186 casting) should be good for around 350-400 horsepower with good valves, springs and a little massaging around the bowls and the sides of the runners. For what you say you want to use it for, I wouldn't spend any money on getting vortecs if you HAVE 186's and the compression ratio is pump gas friendly.

They set up easily with the light lures and the braking stops overruns when casting hard on light gear. I may try the 1.5 jig heads and hard lures and set the control and brake knob really loose, just need to be really hot with the thumb!
